SCOPE OF ROLE
As a Lead Civil Design Engineer, you’ll drive the design and delivery of civil engineering workstreams across EHV substation and utility infrastructure projects. You will oversee concept-to-construction design, lead technical assessments, manage drawings and documentation, and contribute to team development and performance. This role offers direct exposure to DNO frameworks, offshore wind projects, and high-voltage substations (11kV–400kV).
HOW YOU’LL SUCCEED
👷 ♂️ Project & Design Leadership
• Lead a team of 2–3 engineers and CAD technicians.
• Own design deliverables from concept to detailed construction phases.
• Ensure project milestones are tracked and met.
• Oversee rebar, foundation, building, and fence designs to applicable standards (BS/IEC/IEEE).
• Review and approve senior engineer outputs.
📐 Technical Delivery
• Produce and verify structural and civil calculations.
• Design blast walls, substations, fencing, and auxiliary buildings.
• Coordinate with other engineering disciplines to ensure integration.
• Review vendor/subcontractor designs.
• Work across HVAC and HVDC projects including offshore windfarms.
📊 Governance & Reporting
• Monitor and report on design progress to Project Managers and the Head of Engineering.
• Manage documentation using relevant project systems.
• Recommend design solutions and value engineering alternatives.
• Participate in project audits and stakeholder reviews.
🌱 Team Development & Collaboration
• Conduct yearly appraisals and performance reviews.
• Support continuous professional development of direct reports.
• Maintain strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders including DNOs.
WHAT IT TAKES
✅ Experience & Skills
• HNC (or equivalent) in Civil Engineering.
• 8+ years of experience in utility and/or power infrastructure design.
• Hands-on experience with civil design in transmission and substation environments.
• Familiarity with BS, IEC, IEEE standards, and DNO requirements.
• Proficient in AutoCAD and civil calculation tools.
• Knowledge of rebar, blast wall, building, and fence design.
• Ability to work independently on multiple projects with minimal supervision.
• Excellent coordination, reporting, and stakeholder management skills.
